Today I weigh a healthy 180 pounds and I barely have an ounce of fat on me.
But as you know, it wasn’t always like this.
Not long ago I weighed a hefty 278 pounds and I didn’t look, or feel good.
Things began to get out of control after our kids came along, when finding the time to eat well and stay fit became a whole lot harder.
Once we reached our early 40s, we began to put on more and more weight, particularly around the belly.
I hate to say it, but I was finding Liz less attractive.
But I obviously didn’t mention anything because I didn’t want to hurt her feelings… And I now know that she was thinking the same thoughts about me.
The weight gain meant we were starting to feel more and more self-conscious in front of each other in bed too… to the point where we barely had sex at all.
When we did, I was struggling with performance issues. Which were no doubt linked to my weight, and the way I felt about myself.
This resulted in me comfort eating, which created a vicious cycle.
The doctor told me that my blood vessels had become clogged, which had restricted the amount of oxygenated blood getting to my brain.
He said I was lucky not to suffer permanent brain damage.
And the culprit, he said, was my weight.
And he wasn’t wrong.
According to a study in Naples, Italy, obese people are 64 percent more likely to suffer an ischemic stroke than normal weight people. 
And my wife Liz wasn’t fairing much better.
Her weight had ballooned too. Her blood pressure and cholesterol levels were rising fast.
And she was pre-diabetic.
But the biggest danger to our health wasn’t just our weight in general…
It was BELLY FAT.
That’s because this is where the most dangerous type of fat is stored – visceral fat. The life-threatening ‘hidden’ type which collects around your internal organs and smothers them to death.
Visceral fat is toxic to your health, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, fatty liver, and many forms of cancer. [5 - 9]
Both my wife and I had belly fat.
And according to the Doctor, we were ticking time bombs.
We were shocked, and we knew we’d been given a serious reality check.
But it was nothing compared to what happened next…
It was a warm September evening in 2012. And Liz and I had just been out to eat at our favorite restaurant.
We were heading home on the freeway. When out of the blue, smoke started filling the car.
Within seconds, flames began leaping from the heater vents in front of us – which we later discovered were caused by an electrical fault.
Liz tried to pull over.
But as she veered into the right hand lane, a lorry smashed into us from behind, sending our burning car hurtling into a ditch.
Red hot flames poured in like waves of water, and black smoke filled our lungs.
“GET OUT LIZ!” I screamed in panic.
But she couldn’t.
We’d landed in the ditch with the bonnet of the car pointing up.
Liz wasn’t just fighting against gravity. She was fighting against 252 pounds of her own body weight.
“I CAN’T GET OUT JOHN!” she screamed. As she frantically tried to pull herself up.
But it was impossible.
The steering wheel was crushed right into her belly.
I could feel the skin on my legs burning. And I knew I had to get out first to save Liz.
Battling against 300 pounds myself, I had to use every ounce of strength to drag myself up and out of the passenger side door, collapsing in a heap on the ground.
I tried to get to Liz, but I could barely see through all the smoke.
And that’s when the explosion happened. And everything went black.
So how did Liz make it out?
Well, by the grace of God, an off-duty policeman had seen the accident and got out of his car to help.
He’d raced over to the side of the road. And dragged Liz out of the car seconds before the explosion, risking his own life to save hers.
As Liz and I recovered in hospital over the following days, we knew that we were lucky to be alive.
And if this wasn’t a message that we needed to lose weight, nothing was.
We both knew that God had given us a second chance. And we weren’t about to waste it.
After recovering from the car accident, Liz and I made a pledge that we would lose weight together.
Over the next three years, we must have tried dozens of diets and “celebrity” weight loss programs.
I mean we tried everything: souping, juicing, horrible green smoothies that made us want to vomit…
Some of the diets were bizarre, and basically involved starving ourselves.
We were hungry all the time, miserable and the cravings were intense.
But despite all the sacrifice and hard work, nothing worked.
Often we’d lose some weight and get all excited. But within weeks not only would the weight pile back on, but we’d somehow end up even bigger.
Because in most cases, the diets were impossible to stick to.
As time went by, we both began to suffer.
They say you can’t truly love someone until you love yourself.
And I think that was true for Liz and I.
We both hated the way we looked and felt. And because we were so unhappy in ourselves, we started to argue a lot. And our marriage began to fall apart.
Eventually we broke up. And I decided that I should be the one to move out.
It meant leaving my kids behind. And the months that followed were some of the worst of my life.
I fell into a deep depression – a kind of black hole of worthlessness.
It’s embarrassing to admit it, but…
But I didn’t have the guts.
I was so messed up that in my warped mind I decided to punish myself by trying to get even fatter.
If I wanted to die, I might as well go out with a bang, right?
It’s stupid I know. And I’m ashamed to talk about it. But I decided to find the FATTIEST foods I could, and binge on them to see how big I could get.
I just didn’t care anymore.
It was a crazy decision.
But here’s the thing…
… Which I’ll reveal in just a moment.
I pigged out on marbled beef steaks…
Roasted chickens covered in their crisp, fatty skins…
Richly larded pork chops…
Sausages, greasy bacon rashers, fried eggs, butter, cream and cheese.
I mean, I went to town.
After two weeks of eating like this, I woke up in my messy motel room, unshaven and stinking like a garbage can. And decided to check the scales to see how much weight I’d gained…
Not only had I not gained ANY weight.
I’d actually lost 6 pounds.
But more than that, I felt a lot better too.
I seemed to have more energy and focus.
And my blood pressure and blood glucose levels had actually gone DOWN.
I couldn’t understand it, so I decided to do some digging.
I hunted down an old friend of mine from college, Chris Gardner, who was now working as an independent medical researcher at Stanford University.
He’d been involved in researching metabolic function and weight loss for almost 20 years…
“I think you may have accidentally turned on your body’s hidden fat-burning switch”, said Chris, laughing.
“My what?” I replied, confused.
Over the next 40 minutes, Chris explained that inside every human body is an invisible switch, which when turned on, can transform your body into a fat-burning machine in a matter of days. And keep it that way.
“Anyone can do this”, he said, “simply by eating a HIGH-FAT diet.”
I couldn’t believe what Chris was saying.
“But I thought eating fat would make me fat”, I said, confused.
“No, it’s the exact opposite”, replied Chris.
“Dietary FAT is the key to weight loss, and always has been”.
“The war on fat is the biggest mistake in the history of nutrition”, he continued…
So, why do people still think that fat makes us fat?
Back in the 1970s, scientists believed that saturated fat found in foods such as eggs, cheese and meat could raise LDL, or “bad” cholesterol.
And LDL cholesterol was linked to heart disease.
So their theory was that saturated fat caused heart disease.
It was a simplistic theory based on flawed data that has now been completely debunked.
But at the time, this line of thinking led the US Government to publish the first set of dietary guidelines in 1977, calling for a reduction in dietary fat.
Even worse, one of the top goals listed in those dietary goals was to eat more carbs.
Doctors began to base their nutritional advice on the guidelines. And food manufacturers started to develop LOW-FAT products.
The problem was, they found that once you took out the fat, everything tasted like cardboard.
So they replaced those fats with lashings of sugar, sweeteners, chemicals and toxic additives.
In the US, total fat intake decreased by a massive 41% from 1980 to 1997 alone. 
Low-fat food swept the nation, and our consumption of carbohydrates exploded skywards.
After all, it was a simple idea for people to understand: fat makes us fat, right?
We now know that dietary fats are vital to human health, and actually crucial for weight loss.
But the damage was done.
And the result of these guidelines was to be catastrophic for the American waistline and our general health for the next 40 years.
In fact, according to a recent study by the National Center for Health Statistics, the obesity epidemic in the US started at almost the EXACT SAME TIME as the “low-fat” dietary guidelines were published.
Since the “war on fat” began, the proportion of American adults who are obese has more than doubled. 
And shockingly, a total of 3 out of every 4 adults are expected to be overweight or obese by 2020. 
What’s worse, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, nearly 50% of adults living in the U.S. have diabetes or pre-diabetes. , 
Think about that. That’s 1 in every 2 people.
According to Chris, this surge in obesity and type 2 diabetes is all because our diet radically changed in response to dietary guidelines mistakenly set by our own Government.
After speaking to Chris, my own weight gain, and inability to lose it, was now finally starting to make sense to me.
I’d been following low fat diets for years, and so had Liz.
But I was still confused about how I’d been able to LOSE 6 pounds of fat, simply by eating more fat.
And that’s when Chris revealed the Holy Grail of weight loss…
“You lost all that weight John, because you reversed the trend that has been making Americans fatter aand sicker since 1977.”
“You ate a HIGH FAT, LOW CARB diet.”
“In fact, you did it so well, I think you accidentally put your body into a state of KETOSIS.”
“What the heck is ketosis?” I asked.
I’d never even heard of it before.
And that’s when Chris explained how anyone can achieve a ketogenic state.
And turn on their body’s hidden fat-burning switch, simply by reversing their carb to fat ratio.
Chris explained that “ketosis” was the human body’s natural state since the dawn of time.
Back then, men and women were lean, muscular and fueled by animal fat.
The carbohydrates of today didn’t even exist.
But then the Agricultural Revolution came along. And breads, grains, pastries, potatoes, cereals and soda quickly became a staple of the American diet.
“Our diet was flipped on its head”, Chris explained.
“Today, we eat carbs all the time, and very little fat, and it’s slowly killing us”, he said.
“How?” I asked…
What Chris said next explained everything that had happened to me, and hundreds of millions of Americans over the last 40 years.
Apparently, because our diet today is so full of carbohydrates, our body has a quick, easy and never-ending supply of fuel in the form of glucose, or simple sugars...
… Which means it leaves our fat stores in place.
So eating carbs effectively STOPS your body from accessing and burning body fat for energy, because it doesn’t need to.
But there’s a bigger problem.
Every time we eat carbs, it also spikes our blood sugar levels. And insulin is produced to break that glucose down into energy.
But the body doesn’t always use up all of that glucose.
And the glucose that’s not used for energy is converted to glycogen and stored in the liver for future use.
The bad news is, because the American diet is now so carb-heavy, the liver quickly gets full, and we get a kind of “spill over” effect.
The excess glycogen has to go somewhere… So it’s “stored” as adipose tissue, otherwise known as belly fat.
So not only does a low-fat, high-carb diet leave your existing fat stores in place. But it actually accelerates the production of more fat on your body.
This kind of ‘Standard American Diet’, which we’re all now eating, has shifted our metabolism from a natural ‘fat-burning mode’ – which humans enjoyed for thousands of years – into a modern day ‘fat storage mode’.
And with more and more carbs, comes greater and greater blood sugar spikes. And eventually, insulin resistance.
This low-fat, high-carb dietary “switch” is the reason for the obesity epidemic of the last 40 years. And the surge in type 2 diabetes, heart disease, dementia, cancer, and more.
And the U.S. Government is to blame.
Well, the secret to losing weight, and keeping it off, is to force your body to start burning fat for energy, instead of glucose – a process known as KETOSIS.

When you cut your carb intake, your body is deprived of glucose and needs to find an alternative source of energy.
So the liver converts your fat stores into small fuel molecules called “ketones”.
And these ketones replace carbohydrates as your body’s main energy source, hence the term “ketosis”.
On a ketogenic diet your fuel supply is completely “flipped” so that your body runs almost entirely on fat.
Insulin levels are quickly lowered, and fat burning increases dramatically, resulting in rapid weight loss.
In short, your body becomes a fat burner, instead of a sugar burner.And the entire process is quick, 100% safe, and has been proven to outperform every other diet in over 20 randomized controlled trials –the gold standard of scientific studies. [15 - 21]
And study after study now shows that ketosis creates huge improvements in overall health too, including slashing blood sugar levels and reversing type 2 diabetes [25 - 30]…
In one study, as well as shedding 3 times as much weight as the low fat group, the ketogenic group saw insulin levels drop by a whopping 27% on average.

The simple reason according to Dr. Gabriela Segura, a Consultant Cardiologist, is that fat – and the ketone molecules that come from it – is a much “cleaner” fuel for your body than glucose – which is actually less stable, damaging to your body, and can reduce your life span.

In the space of one phone call, my entire outlook on life changed.
I now had a purpose.
I wanted to lose weight, get healthy and get my wife and kids back. And I now knew exactly what to do.
The problem was, I didn’t know HOW.
As Chris explained, I’d got lucky when I was gorging myself on high-fat foods.
I must have accidentally landed on the precise ratio of fat, carbs and protein in order to trigger ketosis and lose those 6 pounds.
The chances were slim that I’d be able to do it again, he said.
